'I do not think we have begun to even realise the possibilities of the camera'
(quote attributed to Alvin Langdon Coburn)
During my second year of studies, I became more interested in the notion of how we define photography; considering what it means not to define photography by its representational qualities but as perhaps something else entirely. Not seeing photography as either a mirror or a window into reality, but more as a construction using light, and therefore opening up the medium to a plurality of uses.
Being interested in examining the medium itself rather than using photography as a tool for exploring other themes, this drew me to work that is commonly classified as 'abstract', because it is self reflective of the photographic process itself.
